NLC Convenes Emergency Meeting In Response To Fuel Price Surge

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced plans to hold an urgent meeting in response to the recent 45% increase in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL). The NLC is calling for the immediate reversal of the new pump prices, which have risen to between ₦855 and ₦897 per liter.

In a statement issued by its president, Joe Ajaero, the NLC expressed deep disappointment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration, accusing it of betraying previous commitments made to the labor unions. The NLC also demanded the release of all protesters detained during demonstrations against bad governance and called for the reversal of the 250% electricity tariff hike implemented in April 2024.

This price hike coincides with the introduction of petrol from the Dangote Refinery and follows earlier protests led by the NLC and the Trade Union Congress against worsening economic conditions in the country. The NLC has pledged to take decisive action after its forthcoming meeting.
